Lesbian week visibility

1–2 minutes

What is being lesbian?

It is being a woman, a non-binary person, genderqueer or a person who identifies with femininity who is attracted to women, non-binary persons, genderqueer or who identifies with femininity.

Some people will prefer to say they are « gay » rather than lesbian, as this term represents them more for one reason or another.

Even though the term  » sapphic  » is sometimes used interchangeably with the term  » lesbian « , they do not mean 100% the same thing.

Important!

  • Trans lesbian women are no less lesbian than cis women who are.
  • People who use pronouns other than « she » are no less lesbian if that is how they choose to identify themselves.
  • People who are aromantic and/or asexual can identify with the word « lesbian ».

Lesbians and discrimination

For many years, lesbians have experienced discrimination because patriarchal society does not take them seriously. Whether it is because their relationship does not involve a man or because they are perceived as having the sole purpose of exciting men.

The discrimination goes as far as the medical point of view. Indeed, since women in same-sex relationships are considered as not having penetrative sex and therefore supposedly less at risk of STIs (which is totally FALSE!), several easily diagnosable diseases are not looked for

Lesbians and discrimination

Discrimination against lesbian people exists…

…but unfortunately, discrimination of lesbian people towards others also exists.

E.g.: the valorisation of « golden lesbians », the rejection of bi, pan, omni women, etc
